After the successful hosting of the first edition of the competition in 2008, the competition is into its second year but the Gambian leader Sheikh Professor Dr Alhagie Yahya AJJ Jammeh has decided to decentralized the tournament to allow teams from all parts of the country to participate in the tournament that serves as a good platform to unite youth from all walks of life.
The annual event formerly called the Zonals Championship was revamped last year with an improved financial package and it was only then competed between Zones recognized by the FA in Banjul, Kanifing Municipality and Western Region.
But according to Observers’ Sports News Editor Nanama Keita, the organizers [Gambia Football Association] have set up a Regional Organizing Committee that will coordinate the Championship at the regional level.
The four regions namely; North Bank Region, Lower River Region, Central River Region and Upper River Region will participate in the event, which will run from December 18 to January 2, 2010.
“We are thrilled to announce that the annual Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Zonal Cup competition has been decentralized to allow other regions to participate” Seedy MB Kinteh president of the FA told Observer Sports.
“A Regional Organizing Committee has been set up to coordinate the affairs at the regional level and each region is required to register two teams for the competition that will be sponsored by His Excellency Sheikh Professor Dr Alhagie Yahya Jammeh," the GFA chief, who hails the Gambian leader for his tireless efforts in developing the country’s sports sector more especially football, said.
