MLS: Revs protect Gambian duo

While the Revs exposed half of their roster, they kept Sainey and Ken as well as veteran stalwarts such as Shalrie Joseph, Steve Ralston and Taylor Twellman and younger players like Kevin Alston and Darrius Barnes away from possible selection by another club. The Revs also protected Jeff Larentowicz even though he may seek a move overseas.

Defender Jay Heaps and forward Edgaras Jankauskas were the most notable omissions from an 11-man protected list submitted ahead of last Wednesday’s expansion draft, which saw goalkeeper Brad Knighton being chosen by the Philadelphia Union.

“The protection of Sainey Nyassi and Abdoulie Mansally while Heaps and Jankauskas, along with goalkeeper Brad Knighton, defender Amaechi Igwe and midfielder Pat Phelan were exposed to selection by another club,” comments veteran Gambian sports commentator Peter Gomez, “is proof of the Gambians’ increased importance to the New England club, especially to the future plans of Coach Steve Nicol.”
