The Belgian Jupiler League’s decision to throw Excelsior Mouscron from the Belgian top tier competition has left Ebrima Sawaneh and KV Kortrijk lie outside the play-off spots ahead of their meeting with Club Brugge on Wednesday.
However, take nothing away from Georges Leekens, who has worked wonders. Ironically a fair amount of this overachivement has been down to the triple loan swoop the club made from Club Brugge, taking Laurent Ciman, Glenn Verbauwhede and Brecht Capon from the Belgian giants.
Kortrijk’s last completed game was a 1-1 draw at home to Westerlo, gained thanks to a late Capon equaliser, and they currently sit eighth in the table. Club lie just three points behind leaders Anderlecht after the standings were revised and are full of confidence at the moment.
Only Loris Reina is definitely out for Kortrijk, although there are slight doubts over Christian Benteke and Salah Bakour, but both should be fine. Club are without Antolin Alcaraz, who is being nursed through an injury, Ronald Vargas, who is also rested, and Joseph Akpala, who has left for the African Cup of Nations. Ivan Perisic has returned to Croatia for family reasons and will probably also skip the game.
